October 22 - 23, 2008
People and Culture Days continues its 6th annual celebration of world cultures, ethnic dance and music, spicy food and a host of other fun activities.
To kick-off the main stage on Wednesday, the event begins with a Mariachi band at 10:00 a.m., followed by Mexican dancing and music. At noon, international students show off their native costumes from their home countries. At 12:30 the Sacramento State Jazz Ensemble fills the amphitheater with horns and percussion, with the day ending in a tribal flute circle.
Thursday begins with West African drumming and dance performances. At 12:30, World Fusion music showcases instruments from around the world followed by American rock-n-roll sounds and a multicultural poetry reading for the finish.
“This year promises to be another memorable fall event that highlights our diversity on campus for all students,” says Sean Booth, event coordinator. “For many departments, such as Geography and English as a Second Language (ESL), this is a time for our students to learn in an experiential manner, interacting with the sounds, tastes, smells, and sights of world cultures.”
People & Culture Days is a highlight of the year for the ESL Program. According to Kaye Foster, ESL Coordinator, “The ESL students are always thrilled to have the opportunity to share their cultural traditions, special artifacts from their home countries, food samples, language and other aspects of their cultures with the Sierra College and Placer County communities. Come share their excitement! Make an origami crane for the 1000 crane project. Learn to say “love” in Russian. Roam around the event with your passport filling the pages with information about cultures around the world.”
Food, live music, vendors such as Nicaraguan pottery, spin-to-win games with prizes, student club booths, artwork displays, and world event posters will be displayed in the cafeteria. Outside ethnic food vendors and the passport questions are all apart of this year’s event.
