A place for new or prospective students to start to get counseling about your academic future is through an orientation given by the Counseling department. In this session, you will learn of all the services, programs, degrees, and certificates available to you at Sierra. You will also learn how to select the proper classes for your educational goals, or how to develop an educational goal if you are still unsure. Individual counseling is usually available along with these sessions.

Individual counseling sessions:
When you meet with a counselor, your focus might naturally be on the classes you need this semester. In academic counseling, we hope to broaden your understanding of how to make yourself successful here at Sierra; as well as to help you choose courses. We will help you come to a clear understanding of your goals and how to achieve them; identify barriers that may stand in the way; and help you plan how to move past them. We will work with you to write a Student Educational Plan (SEP) that you can follow to reach where you want to go.
Transferring from another college?
If you have records from another college, we can advise you of how these units may apply to your future programs. Please bring a copy of your transcripts in with you to any counseling sessions. Please note that other schools can take up to six weeks to send records! We advise that you have transcripts sent to yourself rather than to us. Then, when they arrive, do not open them. Rather, bring them in their sealed envelope to your session. Two advantages: you know when they've arrived, and they are still "official".
