Completing your FAFSA

  1. Complete and mail your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application by March 2nd for priority filling. Use FAFSA on the WEB to expedite processing at www.FAFSA.ed.gov
  2. NOTE: Do not mail in more than one FAFSA application per school year.

  3. When completing the FAFSA:
    • Use a pen with black ink.
    • Fill in ovals completely. If you make a mistake erase completely or use whiteout. Do not X through the oval.
    • Do not write comments or notes in the margins. They will be ignored and may interfere with processing. Print carefully.
    • Round off all figures to the nearest dollar. DO NOT use cents.
    • Do not include notes, tax forms, or letters, they will not be reviewed by the processing center.
  4. Records you will need to complete your FAFSA:
    • Student’s driver’s license and social security card.
    • W-2 Forms and other records of money earned.
    • Federal Tax returns for the prior year. (IRS Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ) for student, spouse (if married), and parents (if student is dependent).
    • Records of untaxed income, such as welfare, social security, TANF, or veteran’s benefits.
    • Current bank statements.
    • Business and/or farm records.
    • Records of stocks, bonds, and other investments.
    • Student’s alien registration number, if you are not a U.S. citizen.
  5. List Sierra College on your application. The Federal school code/ Title IV for Sierra College is 001290. You may obtain additional school codes for other colleges from the Sierra College Financial Aid Office or on the Internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov
  6. Carefully review your application for errors. Send your application in the pre-addressed envelope provided to you inside the FAFSA. If you want to be notified when the processing center receives your application, enclose the attached postcard.
  7. You will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the Federal Processing Center within four to six weeks. If you do not hear from the processing center in this time, call 1-800-4FEDAID (1-800-433-3243). Your SAR contains your financial aid information that will be sent to the institution(s) you listed on your application. This information will be used to process your financial aid award.
