Frequently Asked Questions About Transfer

How and when should I start the process?

  1. Start your planning process early by meeting with a Sierra College counselor to develop a Student Educational Plan (SEP). Plan to see that counselor at least once per semester to make sure that you are on track for transfer to your chosen transfer institution and major.
  2. Attend workshops and seminars offered by the Transfer Center.
  3. Use the "Choices" program on Career Center student computers to research colleges and scholarships.
  4. Use the "Assist" program on Transfer Center student computers (or from your home: http//:www.assist.org) to print lists of courses that are equivalent to lower division classes in your major at most CSU or UC campuses.
  5. Check the Transfer Center events handout ( available at the Transfer Center or at several locations on campus) for upcoming informational events.
  6. Come to the Transfer Center to obtain applications for UC and CSU, to find out about application deadlines and basic transfer requirements.
  7. Check out the web site of the school you are interested in attending.

What is a transfer admission agreement, and how do I get one?

Transfer admission agreements are programs entered into by the student and a UC or private school. It is a contract listing the exact courses you must take and the GPA required for guaranteed admission to that institution.

Sierra College has transfer agreement programs with:

  • UC Davis,
  • UC Riverside,
  • UC Santa Barbara,
  • UC Santa Cruz,
  • UC San Diego,
  • University of the Pacific,
  • San Francisco State University, and
  • Sonoma State University

Transfer Agreements are available to Sierra students who meet certain academic criteria. Most agreeements are written one year in advance and the student must have completed 30 transferrable units at the time it is written. A minimum GPA of 2.8 is required (this is sometimes higher depending on the major). If you are interested in obtaining a transfer agreement, make an appointment with your counselor and they will go over the program in detail giving you additional requirements specific to your needs.
